1914-1991
A career Marine who, after enlisting at age 14, served in China, then later Korea, Albert Tidwell turned to education and writing after retiring to his native Oklahoma in the late 1950s. This site, currently under construction, will serve as a library of his stories that we hope will prove valuable and meaningful for our family for generations to come.
We hope also to gather as many of his stories as possible to bind into a legacy book — who knows how long the current technology will last or how it will evolve. In the meantime, if you knew him or of him, and wish to contribute stories and comments to this site about Albert Tidwell, please let us know.

Good start, Krystyn. Daddy also served in Nicaragua before WWII. I heard him talk about being on the Pacific Islands of Tarawa, Saipan, Tinian, and maybe a few others whose names escape me right now. He was not on Iwo Jima for the famous flag-raising. He was on/in Samoa. One of his self-published books was Able 8 [I think], which was his reflections on and tribute his fellow Marines during WWII.
The first time I remember seeing Daddy I was five. Don, 3, and I were playing in the sandbox behind our house on Liveoak Street in Durant, Oklahoma. He came around the side of the house. I looked up at him and said, “Hi, Daddy,” looked back down, and continued digging in the dirt. Don was probably more welcoming but I don’t know. Mother kept his pictures around the house so we wouldn’t forget him.

Daddy was a good Granpa – most of the time. When my daughters, Krystyn and Karyn, were about 4 and 5, Daddy took them to the city park north of the new [to us] high school on North Seventh Street a few blocks from their house. There’s a newer high school now, but this was more than 50 years ago. They weren’t gone very long when Daddy came storming back into the house with the two little girls walking quietly behind him. Daddy said, “I’ve been attacked in fox holes by [Japanese] and never heard anyone screaming like that one [pointing at Karyn] did when a bug flew in her face!”
